Fold Crumple Crush
The Art of El Anatsui
53 minutes
Filmed in Venice, Nsukka, Nigeria, and the US, this is a lively portrait of the first Black African artist
to achieve world acclaim at the highest levels. Fold Crumple Crush gives an insider's view of the artist's
practice and the laborious process through which thousands of hours of labor transform bottle caps into
vast, shimmering wall hangings that have been acquired by art museums from Tokyo's Setagaya to the Pompidou
in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Behind the charming, easy going artist, the film reveals a man who remains mysterious even to his dearest
friends. The film circles around Anatsui, drawing ever closer to a deep understanding of the man and his
art. We see the artist on the great world stage of the Venice Biennale installing his work, in the small
town of Nsukka as he goes about his daily life, then inside the hive of his studio overseeing assistants
who piece together a huge metal hanging. Finally, Anatsui admits us to his living room and tells us of his
formative years, and about a youthful discovery that clouded his life.
